Happy Cinco de Mayo!

For those who don’t know, Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for the 5th of May) is a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride and a great excuse for a Fiesta!. Cinco de Mayo is a regional holiday in Puebla to commemorate the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. This holiday is not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day (Grito de Dolores) which is celebrated September 16th. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo grew in popularity among Mexican-American communities of the American west, southwest and northwest. According to Time magazine, Cinco de Mayo gained a surge in popularity in the 1940’s after it became commercialized by alcohol companies trying to reach the Hispanic market.

Today Cinco de Mayo has grown into an international holiday to recognize and celebrate Hisbanic culture. Here in Canada, celebrations occur across the country on or around May 5th. If you’re looking for some great Mexican-inspired party supplies?  Click here to check out our Fiesta Theme

Have your very own little fiesta by making these fantastic individual layered Mexican dips!  These are fantastic at both big and small events!

Ingredients

Can of Refried beans, 398 ml (19 oz.)

Container of Guacamole, 454 g (1 lb.)

Container of Sour Cream, 500 ml (17 oz.)

Chunky Salsa, 500 ml (2 cups)

Shredded Cheese, 250 ml (1 cup)

Put refried beans, guacamole and sour cream into 3 separate piping bags. This allows you to add each ingredient efficiently without creating a mess.

Step Two

Put out your desired individual serving pieces. Using our 2 oz serving cups we made around 30 layered dips, however this can change depending on what type of container you choose to serve your dips in.

Step Three

Using the piping bags, add each layer in your desired order. We started with refried beans, then added the guacamole, spooned in the salsa, then topped it with sour cream.

Step Four

Get creative with the garnish! We chose a simple cheese and tortilla chip topping but green onion, chilies or cilantro are all great choices!

Step Five

Serve with plenty of tortilla chips and enjoy!
